Runways
JFK operates four runways in two parallel pairs around the terminal core. Modernization programs widened 13R/31L to 200 ft and added high‑speed taxiways to reduce delays.
| Runway | Length | Width | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13R / 31L | 14,511 ft | 200 ft | Among the longest in the U.S.; supports heavy long‑haul departures. |
| 13L / 31R | 10,000 ft | 200 ft | ILS; key for crosswind operations. |
| 4L / 22R | 12,079 ft | 200 ft | Primary arrival/departure flows; concrete surface. |
| 4R / 22L | 8,400 ft | 200 ft | CAT III and touchdown‑zone lighting. |
When Built & Expanded
- Initial runway system opened 1948; extensions through the jet age (1950s–1960s).
- Late‑2000s/2010s airside work added high‑speed exits and widened 13R/31L.
Runway use depends on wind and noise procedures; configurations change frequently.
