NY JFK AIRPORT - HISTORY
JFK Airport was previously named "Idlewild Airport".
1943 - Idlewild Airport Project begins, on property that was previously the Idlewild Golf Course.
The airport was completed and began commercial passenger flights in 1948. During the construction phase, the aiport was renamed twice, and opened for service with the name "New York Municipal Airport".
The name "Idlewild" stuck in the public's mind, however, and "Idlewild Airport" was common usage until the name was changed to John F. Kennedy Airport in 1963. The current NY JFK Airport name is in honor of the assassinated 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
